Historically, a variety of materials have been used to wrap precious objects and offerings for their protection and for additional adornment. In particular, meticulous attention was paid to wrapping diverse objects used in daily life and court rituals in conformity with appropriate unctions and decorum in the Joseon court. Materials of the highest grade were carefully selected not only for producing goods for the royal family but also for wrapping such items according to royal protocols.
Wrapping in the Joseon court was developed to protect expensive objects from damage and to further enhance their presentation. It represented the royal household’s genuine desire and level of care to showcase their grandeur, elegance, and dignity.
This exhibition introduces the centuries-old tradition of wrapping in the Joseon court through a wide array of wrapping materials. We hope that this exhibition will let you gain an insight into the wisdom and aesthetics of our ancestors as well as their effort to cherish beautiful objects and decorate them with proper formality.
