This woodblock print was produced in 1571, the reign of King Seonjo (r.1567-1608) and it is a copy of an earlier stone constellation chart that was made in 1395 during the reign of King Taejo.

At the center of this chart, a large circle measuring 76cm in diameter encloses every star observable in Korea with the naked eye. Circular dots in various sizes mark not only the locations of the stars but also their brightness, a detail that differentiates the constellation charts of Joseon from other historical charts including the oldest surviving constellation chart of Emperor Chunyou’s reign, Southern Song dynasty. The remaining space surrounding the circular map is filled with inscriptions which present key standard constants for calculation of the calendar system of the time.

This constellation chart is an exhaustive integration of the national standard of Joseon astronomy with a highly advanced type of astronomical charts that record the celestial bodies observed in Korea rather than in the imperial capitals of China.
This woodblock print became a model for the 1687 replica (Treasure) of the stone constellation chart engraved in 1395.
