Gollyongpo, a red dragon robe was the daily office wear of Joseon Kings until the end of the Joseon period. The robe was officially introduced in 1444, the 26th year of King Sejong’s reign, and changes were systematically made to it until the publication of the Supplementary Five Rites of State (Gukjo-sok-oryeui, 國朝續五禮儀) in 1744.
The red robes were daily wear of the sovereign during the Joseon period, however, since King Gojong proclaimed the Korean Empire and became an emperor in 1897, a yellow gollyongpo became the daily office wear for the emperor and a red one for the crown prince.
A gollyongpo is made of cloud-patterned silk gauze for summer wear and satin for winter. It has a jade-green collar attached beneath the scooped neck, which is fastened with buttons on the right shoulder.
This red robe worn by Imperial Prince Yeong, the heir of Emperor Sunjong, was lined with indigo silk and featured insignia with five-clawed dragons embroidered in gold and attached to the shoulders, chest and back. The robe accompanies a jade belt, a black silk coronet and a pair of black deer-skin boots.
