Princess Hwahyeop and Her Makeup: Excavated Relics and Their Analysis

Princess Hwahyeop and Her Makeup: Excavated Relics and Their Analysis

Princess Hwahyeop was born in 1733 as the seventh daughter of King Yeongjo , the twenty-first king of the Joseon Dynasty, and her younger brother was Crown Prince Sado . Princess Hwahyeop married Shin Gwang-su , in 1743 when she was eleven years old, and she passed away in 1752 at the age of twenty. She was buried together with her husband, but in the 1970s their tombs were relocated. Recently, the landlord discovered the original burial mounds and excavations were conducted on three separate occasions from 2015 through 2017.

A variety of objects were found during the excavations, including a tablet identifying the tomb owner as Princess Hwahyeop , an epitaph written by King Yeongjo lamenting his daughter’s death, cosmetic products that she had used, their containers, a mirror, a mirror case, an inkstone, a water dropper, and ink. A conservation team at the museum examined the objects and discovered that the containers still held cosmetic residues inside.

The National Palace Museum of Korea hopes our visitors gain a vignette of life of the Joseon royal family through this new excavation and our research.
